Dangerous Man Brewing Company

May 11, 2016

Those who have not yet visited Dangerous Man probably already know a few things about them.

  1. Beards
  2. Peanut Butter Porter
  3. Milk Chocolate Stout
  4. The combination of 2 and 3.

That’s right – Dangerous Man in North East Minneapolis is famous for not only some meaty beers, but also the iconic Bearded Man logo. After hearing a few people talk about the Peanut Butter Porter at length – I knew it was one that I wanted to try.

However, Ian and I made the mistake of going on a wet Wednesday night. Driving from South Minneapolis. I’ll try to avoid letting the more-than-30-minute-commute there, in stop and go traffic, taint my review, but man! That was annoying.

Fair State Coop

May 1st, 2016

After emerging from Passover and gluten-free purgatory, we decided to immediately get back on the barley train.  All aboard!

Fair State opened in September 2014 and has garnered quite a bit of acclaim in that short time.  At the RateBeer awards in February, they were named the best new brewery in Minnesota for 2015 and the 10th best new brewery in the world (out of over 5400 eligible breweries worldwide!).

The brewery operates under a unique model–at the time they opened, they were only the third cooperatively-owned brewery in the country, and the first in Minnesota.  Under the cooperative model, members actually own a share of the brewery and may elect and run for the brewery’s Board of Directors.  Members also get a number of other perks–early access to limited release brews, happy hour discounts, and in the future, annual refunds.

Burning Brothers Brewery

April 23, 2016

Well – there are two things that we should mention about this review:

  1. It was Passover when we went out to Burning Brothers.
  2. Burning Brothers Brewery is an exclusively Gluten Free Brewery!

That’s a lot to take in. What is Gluten Free Beer? What does it taste like? Why does that matter for Passover? How was this brewery trip unlike any other? Well – we answered some of those questions in our last post.

Burning Brothers (per their website) has been around since 2012. One of their head brewers, Dane Breimhorst, has Celiac. As it goes – he found out he had this gluten intolerance right around the time when they were originally planning the brewery. Armed with his insatiable love for beer and his training as a professional chef – he began exploring gluten free beers!

This is – to be honest – only a short summary of how this brewery came to be. I recommend checking out the “About” section on their website. It’s worth a read – even if just to understand where the name of the brewery came from!

Side note – we had a guest reviewer; Ryan Fagan (@msnguy81 on Twitter) joining us this go around!

Sociable Cider Werks

April 16, 2016

Sociable opened in late 2013 in NE Minneapolis, driven by the vision that “Cider should be much more than the lightly-alcoholic, made-from-concentrate, sweet apple juice boxes that currently dominate the shelf space.  Sociable ciders are well carbonated, dry and always made from real apples.  Simply put, they should be enjoyed like great draught beer. Sociable is not just hard cider, we’re much more.”

They’ve taken a bit of a different approach to ciders than many producers.  Brewers Jim Watkins and Wade Thompson found themselves unimpressed with the body and bitterness of brews made with the most widely-available cider apples, so they use grains and hops to provide those qualities.  Some of their ciders are naturally gluten free (by using gluten-free grains such as sorghum), while others are produced using grains that have undergone an enzymatic process to remove gluten.  They utilize a combination of sweet and sharp apple varieties produced in the Upper Midwest by Pepin Heights Orchards.

Lake Monster Brewing Company

Lake Monster opened December 4th, 2015 in a warehouse off of Vandalia St. in St. Paul. The wide open taproom has all the furnishings of a converted warehouse, exposed air ducts and brick, cement floors, and a fair amount of space to drink in.

They describe themselves thusly:

“At Lake Monster Brewing we aim to make unique versions of classic beer styles, putting our own subtle twist on the flavors craft beer drinkers have come to love. Ranging from esoteric to approachable, subtle to over-the-top, our beers adhere to the philosophy that there is always more to be discovered.”

Sisyphus Brewing

Sisyphus Brewing is a 3 year old brewery located right across the street from The Walker Art Museum’s Sculpture Garden and in close proximity to Downtown Minneapolis and Loring Park. Named after the Greek Legend Sisyphus – the brewery aims to take happiness from the seemingly endless task of brewing beer for the thirsty masses. As they say in their website;

Now that you’ve hopefully contemplated the meaninglessness of your existence, and mine, and everyone’s for that matter… how about another beer? We’d be more than happy to get you one. One need not imagine us, or Sisyphus, happy.”

Fruitlessly pushing a rock up a hill seemed an apt metaphor for parenting, so it was as good a choice as any for our first review.
